摘要

The history of science is replete with pendulums. Many prominent scientists--including Galileo, Isaac Newton, and Leon Foucault--used pendulums in their investigations (Matthews, Gauld, and Stinner 2004; Project Physics 1968). Although pendulums have a long history of being used in science education (Gauld 2004), enhancing these experiences to support language development ensures that all students entering our schools in the coming years will have access to this rich tradition. The need for this type of support is urgent: Immigration has changed and continues to change many schools, and 21st-century students, many of whom are English language learners (ELLs), benefit from opportunities to develop social and academic language and deeper understandings of science.
