Toxic substances are often found in the middle school lab, but science teachers may not be aware that these chemicals are dangerous (e.g., acetic acid, Benedict's reagent, boric acid, copper sulfate, ethanol, sodium hypochlorite bleach). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines toxic substances as "any chemical or mixture that may be harmful to the environment and to human health if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin" (2012).
