摘要

The idea of crosscutting concepts is not new or unique to A Framework for K-12 Science Education (NRC 2011) or the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS Lead States 2013); "common themes," "unifying concepts," and "crosscutting ideas" have been presented before in previous science-education reform movements such as the National Science Education Standards, NSTA's Science Anchors Project, and Science for All Americans. Unfortunately, these ideas were neither embraced by most teachers nor widely used in state or local curricula or assessments. This time, with the NGSS, the inclusion of crosscutting concepts in all K-12 performance expectations ensures that such unifying themes or ideas will be integrated with the other two dimensions (science and engineering practices and disciplinary core ideas) to become a necessary part of science curriculum, instruction, and assessment at all grade levels.
