We investigated the removal of chloride from various solutions (NaCl,HC1,MgCl_2,A1C1_3,CaCl_2,and NH_4C1) at 60 deg C for 3h using magnesium-aluminum oxide,Mg_(0.80)Al_(0.20)O_(1.10).prepared by the thermal decomposition of a hydrotalcite-like compound,Mg_(0.80)Al_(0.20)(OH)_2(CO_3)_(0.10) centre dot 0.78H_2O.The degree of Cl~- removal from solution increased with the amount of Mg_(0.80)Al_(0.20)O_(1.10) used.When Mg_(0.80)Al_(0.20)O_(1.10) was added to 0.5 M Cl~ solutions of HC1,MgCl2,A1C1_3,and NH_4C1 in a Mg_(0.80)Al_(0.20)oO_(1.10)/Cl~- molar ratio of 8.75,the degree of Cl removal exceeded 95%.The degree of Cl~- removal from NaCl and CaCl_2 solutions was slightly lower,approximately 80 and 90%,respectively.These results reveal that both the amount of Mg_(0.80)Al_(0.20)O_(1.10) added to chloride solution and the nature of the cations in the solution affect the efficiency of Cl~- removal from solution.
