Fork Lift Truck Association chief executive Peter Harvey looks at the aims of Safetember and discusses how every one of us can work towards making workplaces safer simply by not tolerating bad practice. In the UK we are famous for our stiff upper lip and remaining stoic and loyal at all times. Sadly, it seems that in some workplaces today, showing allegiance to our peers wrongly manifests itself as turning a blind eye and refusing to speak up when we witness bad practice, even when it is really dangerous. That is why the theme of our month-long safety campaign, Safetember, is: See danger, speak up! That can be harder than it sounds. If everyone else is laughing at a dangerous prank involving a fork lift truck, being the one dissenting voice is difficult. It takes confidence and genuine courage.
