Advancing in Ant-technology in Cashew: Issues and Strategies

摘要

As an ideal component of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy against the major pests of cashew, bio-control with natural enemies (in particular ants) has not so far received appropriate attention. Ant-technology (Red ant/ weaver ant/green ant, Oecophylla smaragdina) as a pest management tactics - originating from China long back, was recasted from ancient traditional to modern form, could successfully attain higher yield with lower costs than the use of chemical insecticides. This technology is also friendly to environment, and brings significant profit to the farming community, including the production of 'organic cashew'. This technology can well be advocated in cashew pest management, especially for tea mosquito bug (TMB) in Indian context. However, prior to its implementation, a lot more brain storming discussions and debates has to go, a sizable research ought be done in this line. This paper, a humble attempt has been done on the current status, problems and prospects of this emerging technique in Indian context.
