The most common techniques of hepatic imaging in small animal practice are abdominal radiographs with or without contrast media, and ultrasound. Standard radiographs are useful to evaluate the general size, shape, position, and opacity of the liver. Evaluation of liver size is subjective and must be interpreted in light of factors such as the animal's age, size, gastric contents, and degree of inspiration. The normal homogenous hepatic opacity may be disrupted by gas or mineralization. Changes in liver position are usually associated with diaphragmatic changes such as hernias, although abdominal distention may displace the liver cranially.
