Survival and vigor of southern highbush blueberry genotypes with and without pine bark mulch

Numerous southern highbush (SHB) blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum hybrids) genotypes, including several recent releases from Florida, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Arkansas, were evaluated for their performance in atypical highbush soils with andwithout pine bark mulch in Alapaha and Griffin, GA. Plants were established in 1998, and evaluations continued through Fall of 2000. In general, genotypes performed better at the Coastal Flatwoods area in Alapaha than at the Piedmont area in Griffin. Overall, mulched plants survived better and were more vigorous than non-mulched plants at both locations. At Alapaha, most genotypes had vigor ratings greater than 5 (on a 1 to 10 scale) when mulched. Top performers at Alapaha (based on plant vigor and survival) under mulched conditions were 'Cooper', 'Magnolia', 'Reveille', and the selections TH-621 and TH-622. Other genotypes that performed moderately well when mulched were 'Georgiagem', 'Jubilee', 'O'Neal', and 'Star'. In Griffin, top performers with mulch were 'Jubilee', 'O'Neal', and 'Ozarkblue'. Under conditions without mulch, the best genotypes at Alapaha were 'Marimba', TH-621, and TH-622. At Griffin the best non-mulched genotype was 'Reveille'. 'Southmoon' and 'Misty' were the worst performers atboth locations whether mulched or not. 'Southmoon' in particular had poor survival. Overall, these data should provide useful comparisons for selecting southern highbush genotypes for production in the Southeast.
