Gerdau is not really a popular name in Minnesota. But the Brazilian steel giant's plan to invest in excess of 50 million dollars in its Mississippi River minimill, located in the industrial southeast tip of St. Paul, is making positive buzz from labor, business and city officials. Gerdau has started a two-year, 55 million dollars investment to change the 1965-vintage "continuous caster" -the computer-controlled heart of the steel plant, which melts crushed cars and other scrap and shapes it into new products for the mining, energy and construction industries.
