The Richtersveld is one of South Africa's remotest wilderness areas, ensconced within a broad sweep of the Orange river upstream of the Orange river mouth. It is perhaps best known for the images it conjures up of a barren, unforgiving landscape of desert mountains and peculiar vegetation, Less well known is that the area becomes carpeted in flowers after spring rains to rival anything from Namaqualand. It was with the latter in mind that the author made a 4-day visit to the area at the end of August 1995.
