When the Exxon Valdez ran aground on the Bligh Reef in March 1989, spilling 11 million gallons of crude oil into the icy blue waters of Alaska's Prince William Sound, a wave of large consequences followed. An estimated 36,000 migratory birds, 100 baldeagles, countless fish, and scores of sea mammals perished. A thousand miles of coastline and 10,000 square miles of water were fouled with oil thick as tar. Three years of intensive cleanup began Moreover, when it became cleai that the disaster resulted from antiquated equipment and a corporate attitude indifferent to all but the bottom line, Exxon found itself at the receiving end of record- breaking legal judgments.
