During the past decade, the urban and community forestry paradigm in North America has shifted from focus on beautification to one that encompasses all of the environmental, conservation, economic, and social benefits of community trees. This paper describes the different roles urban forestry has on: air quality and climate protection; urban poverty; water resources; solid waste management; mental health and well-being; economic prosperity; and loss of biodiversity. Also discussed are the constraints to urban forestry, regional urban forest plans, and one forest and watershed restoration..
