摘要

Today we see global environmental changes driven autogenically, by a single species—Homo sapiens, whose population has been increasing exponentially and whose range is now global—usurping habitat, plant productivity, fisheries, clean air, and waterfrom most of the other species thai share the planet with us. How we behave—perhaps like a beast, perhaps like an angel—may well determine whether ihis planet can continue to sustain human life. I am not counting on an interstellar delivery of new resources to save us, but I certainly hope we can do better than the well-known population of reindeer introduced to St. Matthew Island in the Aleutians during the 1940s. Multiplying beyond their sustainable food supply, the reindeer suffered a catastrophicpopulation crash on their "planetary" ecosystem.
