摘要

Collaboration is increasingly important in conservation, and is evident in both action and discourse. To understand how discourses about collaboration vary during environmental decision making, this research evaluates rhetoric and claims about place within mass media discourses about conservation in the Adirondacks. Local newspaper articles and editorials published during 1996-2013 concerning six major conservation projects were studied using content and thematic analyses. Results show that collaborative rhetoric increased across the study period, while conflict rhetoric declined, paralleling the rise of collaborative planning efforts; uses of place imagery also varied by types of spokespersons, external factors influenced discourses, and there was an increasing convergence between conservation sponsors and local communities regarding the importance of collaboration and public participation. As natural resource managers increasingly embrace community-based natural resource management, this study raises normative questions about the consequences of collaborative and conflict rhetoric.
