摘要

From ecology, we know that ecotones provide especially rich habitats for diverse species. The places where ecosystems overlap contain a greater variety of resources and possibilities. However, life in an ecotone presents more than its share of challenges. A species must learn to successfully compete with those from other ecosystems in addition to its own kind. A species must adapt to different circumstances. Interdisciplinary activities mirror ecotones in that they present both opportunities and constraints. Cooperation among disciplines opens up new resources and possibilities and enriches the prospects for discovery. However, this requires extending oneself beyond the comfort zone of one's own field. To be successful, one must have a firm grounding and confidence in a discipline. Such a base enables an individual to bring some things of value to the collective endeavor.
