摘要

Our father, although born in Germany, grew up in Namibia (formally, South West Africa) and mainly at Kolmannskuppe, a diamond digging belonging to the Consolidated Diamond Mines (CDM), situated just North of Luderitzbucht. His father (my grandfather) was a local building contractor who, as a matter of interest, was involved in the building of the houses for the CDM which today, after all these years, and because of the extremely arid climate, are still perfectly preserved, even if most of them are partially covered with sand known as the "Ghost Town" of the Namib. Our father got a job as an apprentice fitter and turner with CDM. Upon completion of his apprenticeship he was sent to Germany by my grandfather, to see what the outside world looked like. In Germany he met our mother.
