As every Yorkshire caver knows, somewhere behind Malham village therelies an enormous cave system waiting tobe explored. In spite of extensive diggingoperations dating from the 1930s (Warwick1956) to the present day and cave divingexplorations from the early days of theCave Diving Group (Butcher 1953) to theextensive underwater digging campaignsof the modern era (Cordingley 1994 andCave Diving Group newsletters from No.98to present), access to the cave system haseluded generations of would-be explor-ers. The longest cave in the catchmentso far explored is the underwater systemof Malham Cove Risings which endsupstream in a boulder choke (total lengthapproximately 1.6km).
