2009 was easily Derbyshire's mostrewarding year this decade. Since thediscovery of the UK's deepest shaft, Titan,in 1999 the Derbyshire digging scene haskept ticking over with a few moderatefinds every other year. Peak Cavern'sNCC Shafts started it off in 2001, provid-ing a 70m vertical assault course onlyminutes away from the main tourist route.Sidetrack Cave at 479m long with fineformations and an appetising potential wasthe most notable discovery in 2002. ThenWaterways Swallet probably won the racein 2004/5 by increasing its depth to 125m,making it the fourth deepest in the PeakDistrict. However, these were all isolateddiscoveries, rather than a closely-relatedcollection!
