Following the 2008 breakthrough into the Saint Patrick's Extension of Shannon Cave, a small rift intersecting the main passage was explored in January 2009 through 30m of the tight Snake Escape meander to a 15m-high aven chamber, Starlight Aven. This was liberally covered with gypsum crystals, and was bolted to a ceiling-level phreatic tube. The tube, Serpent's Curse, progressed as a flat-out crawl for 70m before opening out and traversing over a series of deep pitches, the last of which, Totally Traversable Pitch,carried a small stream in its floor (see survey pp18-19).
