On November 28th 2012 a group of 12 people assembled by Yordas Wood, between Ingleton and Dent in the Yorkshire Dales, and set off for Brown Hill Pot - or more accurately Floyd's Entrance - with tools, scaffolding poles and clamps, and planks of wood. The task was to remove the oil drums that had corroded badly over 30 years and replace them with a 600mm plastic twin-wall pipe that would once again make the entrance safe. An intriguing aspect of this work was that in order to undertake it, a substantial number of the conservation team had been diverted from their dig in Notts II, a dig now nearly 70m long and excavated through a totally choked 3m diameter phreatic tube. This dig was clearly going somewhere and excitement had been running high. So how had they been lured from that onto something much less interesting and of seemingly lower priority?
