The Speedwell Cavern system is located in the north of the Derbyshire Peak District on the edge of the Lower Carboniferous limestone deposits. (See map, right). To the north of the Hope Valley, at a higher altitude, lie the Upper Carboniferous deposits of shale, sandstone and gritstone. Running off these deposits from Rushup Edge is an abundance of allogenic streams, which sink into a number of swallets, named PO to P12. Some of the better-known swallets have alternative names such as Jack Pot (P8) and Giant's Hole (P12). All of these streams flow through the cave systems until they meet the phreatic zone and disappear into the world of the cave diver. Dyetracing experiments over a 40-year period have shown that all of these streams rise in the Speedwell cave system at both Main Rising and Whirlpool Rising.
