摘要

For the successful operation of a lumber manufacturing plant, the great primary issue economically is "logging the mill." So varied are the conditions surrounding different localities, and so vast is the subject of logging a modern mill economically, that the limits of this paper will permit only a general survey, touching such points as shall be deemed salient. Felling of trees by the crosscut saw is now universal, and up to a very late date it has been the custom to leave stumps from two to four feet high to suit the convenience of sawyers. But the enhanced values of stumpage attracted the attention of prudent operators to the great waste of the choicest portion of the trees. Thus, progressive loggers have adopted the following rule: "The heightof the stump shall not exceed the diameter of the tree, with a 20 inch stump as a maximum."
