My last article covered lever weight strain systems found in older bandmills. Most newly manufactured bandmills have an air strain system, which means that more strain can be easily applied to the saw. Reaction time of the lever weight system is measured in tenths of seconds; air strain system reaction time is measured in milliseconds. This has become a critical factor in the operation of thinner gage band saws. It is very important to maintain a very rigid saw blade that is not easily deflected during the cut by knots, pitch or hard spots in the log. Once a thin bandsaw is deflected or snaked it can sometimes become useless. By maintaining the saw's rigidity throughout the cut, keeping all slack out of it at all times, the life of the saw blade isextended and a better product is manufactured.
