According to Roger and Kathy Presl, their company, Quality Hardwood Products (QHP), has been built with an environmental ethic of respect for the timber resource and the land. They have translated this ethic into a business approach Roger describes asfollows: "Take what the resource offers and work with it, Be efficiency minded rather than production minded and grow at a comfortable rate, being careful not to create a problem larger than the one you hope to eliminate." In both environmental and business contexts, the Presls believe an overemphasis on production can be detrimental. Located in North Manchester, Ind., an area in the state's northeast area where prime hardwood forests coexist with agriculture, QHP purchases much of the timber it processes from area landowners and usually harvests it with its own crews Occasional purchases of cut logs are made when needed. Each year the company produces or handles about 2 MMBF of lumber, 2 MMBF of veneer logs, 600 MBF of pallet stock and the equivalent of 2 MMBF of packaged firewood.
