摘要

How has NHLA's mission grown and changed over time? NHLA was formed in 1898 to bring the hardwood industry together to form one acceptable lumber grading system. The process ended up taking about 20 years before a system was put into place. For many years the main mission was teaching and enforcing the rules. Forty years ago, the association had more than 100 field inspectors in its employ, and those inspectors constituted about 85% of the total budget. Now the inspection service is less than 20% ofthe budget, and there has been a great expansion of services to meet the expanded mission of service. The NHLA Mission statement: To serve NHLA members in the North American hardwood lumber industry by: maintaining order, structure and ethics in the hardwood marketplace; providing member service unique to the hardwood industry; assuring a sustainable and available supply of hardwood sawtimber to meet members' needs; building positive relationships within hardwood community.
