Hamer closes one mill, opens another in Morgantown, W. Va., doubling average production. Carl Sickles, manager of Jim C. Hamer Co.'s new Morgantown mill, says this latest addition to the company's diverse West Virginia-based operations went online May1, 2006. Morgantown is far to the north of the state, almost on the Pennsylvania state line, only 75 miles south of Pittsburgh. Prior to heading up the Morgantown mill, Sickles managed the now-closed Hamer mill in Rachel, W.Va., about 35 miles from Morgantown. "It was in desperate need of upgrades," Sickles explains. Given the number of upgrades needed, management determined it would be more cost effective to shut down that operation and open a new one in a different location.
