Areas such as coal mines, oil refineries, chemical processing plants and refuelling stations etc. hive the presence of combustible dusts, flammable liquids, gases, vapours or mists. These may be present in a quantity such that they form an explosive mixture with air. A small spark, arc or heated surface may result in an explosion of such atmospheres. Such hazardous area require use of special equipment, also known as Ex Equipment, which prevent, to the extent possible, hazards associated with such explosive atmospheres. It is imperative that proper standards are laid down and followed for such area due to safety considerations. At Bureau of Indian Standards, the standards formulation activity for this area is carried out by Electrical Apparatus for Explosive Atmospheres Sectional Committee, ET 22, The primary duty of a Sectional committee is the development and systematic review of Indian Standards. The scope of ET 22 is to prepare guidelines and requirements for electrical apparatus for use where there is a hazard due to the possible presence of ignitable gas, vapour liquid practices of dust in the atmosphere.
