The far reaching impact of various World Trade Organization norms may threaten the fortunes of the small and medium enterprises in the country, according to a study by Exim Bank. Proper policy support for SMEs given their potential in industrial and export growth as well as in generating jobs was called for, it said. The study titled 'Export Performance of Small and Medium Enterprises in India' notes that while a number of units in the sector have been striving hard to obtain ISO or BIS certifications and compete against cheaper imports, the overall picture appears gloomy, given the lack of policy support. According to the report, the strategies for SME development should be primarily a spontaneous phenomenon which are guided, but not determined by policy interventions, it is necessary to create favourable conditions for SME development through spontaneous initiatives. Such spontaneous initiatives should be supported through policy interventions so that barriers are removed and profit expectations are generated among entrepreneurs.
