Additional Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Yash Pal Singh said that even though there are more than three lakh jewellers in country only i 045 of them have taken BIS licence for hallmarking gold jewellery. BIS licence is a certificate that proves the purity of ornaments. in a country where more than 880 tonne gold is imported every year, 80 percent of it is for making ornaments while there is no guarantee of its purity. That there is no awareness among the customers and traders about gold's purity is evident from the number of BIS licencees among jewellers for the hallmarking of their ornaments.
