The Food and Agriculture Division Council met at New Delhi under the chairmanship of Dr Mangla Rai, Secretary Department of Agriculture Research and Engineering and Director General Indian Council of Agricultural Research on 6 February 2007 at BIS, New Delhi. Opening the meeting, Dr Rai stressed on the new directions that need to be given to this area due to globalization which has led to greater trade in this largest sector of the economy. New directions were given to standards being developed in the fields of biotechnology, agriculture management, specialized foods etc. The Council further stressed on the need for greater international participation in view of the enhanced trade, being one of the fastest growing export sectors, taking into detailed consideration all aspects of food safety. The Council appreciated the work being done by the various technical committees on harmonization with international standards and looked forward to greater participation by all stakeholders in the work of international standardization for the benefit of national standards.

7. Distortions to world trade: impacts on agricultural markets and farm incomes. Abstract: This paper provides estimates of the impact that removing all merchandise trade distortions (including agricultural subsidies) would have on food and agricultural production, trade and incomes.
