12th meeting of Transport Engineering Division Council (TEDC) was held on 27 February 2003 at New Delhi under the Chairmanship or Shri B.S.V. Rao and Shri L.R. Singh as the member secretary. Shri S.K. Choudhury, Deputy Director General (Technical) welcomed the chairman and members on behalf of the BIS Directorate General and informed the Council about the latest guidelines received from the controlling Ministry and the policy decision taken by BIS Management concerning standardization activity. He emphasized that as per guidelines received, efforts were on to make Sectional Committees more compact and consumer dominated. While reconstituting these Sectional Committees the participation and contribution of the members should also be taken into consideration and the members continuing for more than six years should possibly be replaced by new members capable of contributing in emerging new tehnologies and new areas of work. He also called upon a stringent scrutiny of Indian Standards in the Automotive Sector especially those involving public safety and covered under mandatory those involving public safety and covered under mandatory certification. He also suggested to explore possibility of funding the standardization activity, wherever feasible, in order to compensate for the increasing cost of publication of standards and called upon reducing the time taken for making the standards for which time norms had been laid down by BIS, that is, 12 months for priority 1 and 28 months for priority 2 category.
