The new generation of super-austenitic grades can offer very good resistance to crevice corrosion in high temperature seawater and can be suitable for applications beyond the capabilities of 25 Cr duplex. The super-austenitic alloy, N08031, has been shown to be suitable for manufacture of long length coiled tubing in the annealed condition following seam welding and drawing. The autogenous orbital joints have also been found to exhibit similar corrosion resistance to the base material. A review of crevice corrosion data in seawater has shown a wide spread in crevice corrosion results reported. This is affected by the testing technique and the environmental conditions. Cold working of super-austenitic alloys has shown to be capable of providing strength levels equivalent or higher than 25 Cr duplex. The tubes can be supplied in very long coiled lengths including high strength cold worked orbital joints. An overlay weld joining technique on cold worked tube showed that the joint could achieve similar strength to the base tube material. The lean duplex alloy grade AL2003 has shown it can be readily fabricated into seam welded and drawn coiled tubing, whilst maintaining good mechanical and corrosion properties.
