OPTIMIZING THE HARDENABILITY AND COMPOSITION OF HEAT-TREATED BORON STEEL

摘要

The need for considerable improvement in the properties of high-strength automobile struts of complex shape imposes additional requirements on the structure and properties of metal. The use of boron steel is of most promise here. However, until recently, the quality of Russian boron-steel rolled bar did not consistently meet the standards of automobile manufacturers. Correction of the chemical composition and production technology of steels for the specific conditions of the metallurgical enterprise is required. This permits specified hardenability of the steel even with a relatively large nitrogen content, which is typical of electrofurnace smelting, and a favorable combination of strength and technological plasticity of the rolled steel in the annealed and heat-treated states [1-3]. At Severstal Joint Stock Company, rolled boron-steel 12G1R, 20G2R, and 30G1R bar (diameter 6.5-25 mm, in bundles) of optimized composition is now in production; the metallurgical quality and hardenability of such steel matches its non-Russian counterparts.
