THE ELUSIVE COMPANION of Sirius is the nearest white-dwarf star in the sky. For the last couple ofdecades, faint little Sirius B has been too close to dazzlingSirius A for practically any telescope to resolve it. But nowits orbit is carrying it back into less difficult view (as toldon page 33). Sirius is at its highest and best on Januaryand February evenings — so now is a good time not onlyto look for this elusive prize, but also to cast back to its1862 discovery.
