On the night of December 13, 1908, the 60-inch tele-scope atop California's Mount Wilson saw first light. Nofanfare orspeechifying marked its first breath of star-light, but that instant marked the beginning of an era.Looking back a hundred years we can see in the 60-inch ANTHONY MISCH & WILLIAM SHEEHAN (1.5 meter) the first of a new age of telescopes, thepatriarch of today's giants, the first modern reflector. The 60-inch was born to an odd couple, one a blue-blood at home among Chicago's moneyed aristocracy, theother from a hardscrabble, blue-collar background — twovery different species of visionary whose combined geniusgave astronomy the tools for a new century.
