摘要

READERS ARE LIKELY familiar with the ball-and-socket telescope design popularized by commercial offerings such as Edmund Scientific's venerable Astroscan or Mag 1 Instrument's PortaBall. Several home-built versions have also been featured in this magazine, including Jerry Oltion's super-sized Astroscan clone (S&T. September 2011, page 64). These telescopes have one thing in common that limits both their size and their popularity among telescope makers: they require some kind of rigid ball or hemisphere. Oregon amateur Chuck Lott, however, has found a way around this construction obstacle.
