EXPERIENCED OBSERVERS know that most bright nebulae give up subtle secrets onnights of excellent transparency and seeing.That's certainly the case for the well-knownobject in this installment of Going Deep. Our target is NGC 6543, the prized Cat'sEye Nebula in Draco. Listed in catalogs atmagnitude 8.1 and 23" x 17" in extent, the Cat's Eyematerializes in larger telescopes as a high-contrast, blueor greenish blue "iris." The object's evocative monikercertainly resonates with me. Years ago, my family's cat (across between a tabby and a Himalayan) possessed lovelyaqua eyes.
