of beautiful imagesfrom the Hubble Space Telescope has inspired many ama-teur astrophotographers.Among other things, the imageshave shown us what those little blobs in our photographslook like when pictured from above the turbulent veil of Earth's atmosphere. These razor-sharp views present atwofold challenge for ground-based astrophotographers:to make our own images go deeper and show more detail.Until recently, these problems were addressed sepa-rately within the amateur-astrophotography community.Deep-sky astrophotographers have mastered the tech-niques that allow us to capture CCD images of the faint-est specks of light in the night sky(ST February 2008,page 88).On the other hand, planetary imagers usinghigh-speed video cameras have produced stunninglydetailed views of bright solar-system objects, pushing thetheoretical resolution limits of their equipment.
