I OFTEN WONDER which Messier objects are least often visited by backyard astronomers. There's no way to know for sure, but I suspect the bright Messier that receives the least attention is M55. Why? First, this globular cluster is in Sagittarius, where it's overshadowed by some of the most spectacular objects in the sky. Second, with a declination of –31°, M 55 has a brief window of opportunity for observers at mid-northern latitudes. Indeed, I remember this being one of the last Messiers I tracked down during my initial run through the list many, many years ago.
