Autumn's first hours of the night build the suspense for the mid-evening and late-night arrival of the brilliant constellations of winter. Okay, it may seem like cheating to give autumn credit for the splendors of winter stars. But there's a lot to be said for anticipation and the thrill of arrival. Each step in the arrival of the winter constella-tions on an autumn night whets the appetite for the next. First we see Capella and the Pleiades, then the Hyades and Aldebaran, then mighty Orion and his vertical-when-rising Belt. After that we see Procyon, the Little Dog Star. And the impossible-to-top final act is the Big Dog Star, Sirius, the brightest nighttime star of all.
