IN THE 1990S, NASA visionaries planted the seeds ofan ambitious idea. Rather than conduct one-off, unre-lated missions to Mars as we had been doing, NASAshould embark on a long-term, strategic program of Marsexploration, with missions launching at each opportunityand building upon the discoveries of their predeces-sors. Those seeds have sprouted gloriously over the pastdecade. Among the most exciting findings has been thediscovery of minerals that reveal that Mars had a water-rich early history
