摘要

A systematic error is contained in the lateral strain values measured in uniaxial tests of jacketed rock samples. The error depends upon the Poisson's ratio of both the jacket material and of the rock tested and also the ratios of the jacket and specimen dimensions. For conditions usual in rock mechanics practice, the error ranges between -5% and +5%, for jackets with v=0 and v=0.5 respectively. The correction of the lateral strain value can be achieved using expression (9) when the dimensions of the jacket, both inner and outer radii, are known before and after it is stretched over the specimen.
