摘要

Almost from the inception of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), park-palaces, hunting parks, 'traveling palaces' (xinggong iT^), and other types of designed landscapes played a central role in imperial statecraft.Sites of governance, ritual, devotion, and leisure, imperial landscapes1 were not only settings for historical events, but, read as sources in the study of those events, offer unique insight into aspects of Qing imperial history. Indeed, in principle, designed landscapes are especially well suited to this application, as they, like the political circumstances of the royal patrons that animate them, change over time. This is true both in a natural sense — plants and trees grow and wither, lakes silt upand are dredged, buildings decay and are rebuilt — and from the perspective of design and construction, as designed landscapes are inevitably altered by the shifting priorities of successive masters. Likewise, imperial landscapes bear the accretive marks of their function as stages for performances of rulership, and of the passage of time, marks that may be uncovered and read in an effort to understand the changing terms of both performance and participants.
