I wish in this article to explore the antagonism between the ideas of one of Britain's most influential garden designers of the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries, Gertrude Jekyll, and one of Britain's most celebrated naturalists, Charles Darwin. Darwin might not seem an obvious name to put forward in the context of the history of garden design and yet the garden has always been, amongst other things, an expression of perceptions about the natural world and man's place within it — subjects on which Darwin's thesis of natural selection bore crucial implications. I hope, through a detailed analysis of Jekyll's outlook on the natural world and her design principles, expressed in her writings, to demonstrate how significantand potentially devastating these implications were for her and in so doing provide, what I believe is, a new and important key to understanding her work.
