When we solicited manuscripts for this special issue on culture, we cast the net broadly. We asked for papers about the effects of culture on substance use, the effects of substance use on culture, and any other examples of ways in which substance use and culture can coevolve. We purposely left the definition of "culture" vague-both because scholars, and a broad range of individual and systemic substance use intervention stakeholders-policy makers, have been unable to agree on a definition of culture for hundreds of years and because we wanted the authors to interpret culture in their own unique ways without being constrained by a definition.
