Soil S Status and Crop Responses to S Application in Anhui Province, China

The S requirement for optimal crop growth has been gradually recognized, particularly over the past two decades, as soil S deficiencies have been increasingly reported both in China and abroad (Feyh et al., 1993; Liu et al., 1981, 1990, 1992; Mamaril,1992; Gates et al., 1985; Schnugetal., 1990;Tandon, 1995). Liu et al. (1980; 1991) reported soil S-deficiency status and crop responses to S fertilization in northern and southern China. Anhui Province, which embodies characteristics of both northern and southern China, includes some areas that are likely S-defi-cient. These S deficiencies have been exacerbated by decreased S deposition from industrial sources and the wide use of non-S-containing NPK fertilizers in agricultural production. To evaluatesoils S fertility status and crop responses to S fertilizers in Anhui Province, a three-year investigation was conducted from 1993 to 1996.
