摘要

In the first half of the present paper, we describe the history of the theory of multiple zeta-functions, mainly its analytic aspect and applications to number theory, since the work of Barnes and Mellin at the beginning of the 20th century. In that history, the main concern had been the one-variable case, but recently the analytic study of multiple zeta-functions of several variables was begun, and new structures of multiple zeta-functions, which cannot be seen if one only consider the one-variable case, were discovered. In the second half of this paper we survey such a theory of the multi-variable case, including the research of the author himself.
