According to Weierstrass [90], Riemann mentioned in his lecture in 1861 that the continuous function defined by ∑(sink~2x)/k~2 is nowhere differentiable,1 which is a famous story frequently referred to as the first moment when lacunary series appeared. Weierstrass [91] used a lacunary series to construct a power series whose convergence circle is the natural boundary.
