Rates have been moving up gently through Q3, with the Baltic Dry Index passing 3,700 for the first time since April 2005. Richards Bay-Rotterdam cape business is trading up in the high teens as the end of Q3 approaches, up from not much above 12.00 dollars in H1, while the forward curve points to continued strength. Brokers appear more optimistic about prospects at the moment, citing very strong steel industry generated growth in raw materials and finished product movements, strong coal trading and high levels of grain shipping. The general expectation is that this situation will continue into 2007.
