This paper deals with recent trend in automation and information technology in an integrated steel plant. The latest technological features in Coke oven, Sinter plant, Blast Furnace, Steel making, Rolling Mill and the automation requirement for the new technologies have been discussed in this paper. With the improved automation system, the specific energy consumption in an integrated steel plant shall be 5.5 G Cal/tcs. The improvement in productivity and consistent quality that can be achieved by automation has been discussed.
